One phone is causing a big stir in the world of mobile phones
: the QWERTY follow-up to the 5800, the Nokia N97. But is the Sony Ericsson X1 the fly in its ointment…?

Nokia N97 – all set to dominate the world?

With the Nokia 5800 on course to bring touchscreen mobile phones to the mid-range market, that leaves a massive gap at the very top-end, and yes, there IS a touchscreen mobile phone on its way to take its place as the top-end powerhouse: the utterly awesome Nokia N97. This takes the same Symbian S60 Touch interface and packages it into the shell of a proper, full-tilt smartphone. Which means it has an even more huge, 3.5 inch screen, a flip out QWERTY keyboard, and the camera’s been upgraded to 5 megapixels. The Nokia N97 is, in a very definite way, destined to be the new flagship Nseries mobile phone, and it’s genuinely as high-spec as the rumours had us believe, with HSDPA, GPS, digital compass, and integrated Flash, so that you get an internet experience that tops any other mobile phones! Put it like this: the Nokia N97 is awesome. It easily outdoes just about all other mobile phones and as the Nokia 5800 angles to take over the mid-range, the Nokia N97 is clearly designed to dominate the high-end market.

But the thing is… there’s already a QWERTY mobile phone on the market that is better than any before it, and it could well put a spanner in the spoke of the Nokia N97.

Sony Ericsson X1 – already setting the world alight

Released at the tail end of 2008, the Sony Ericsson X1 is the Swedish/Japanese manufacturer’s first foray into the world of Windows Mobile phones, and quite frankly, it’s the best Windows Mobile phone ever made. It’s ludicrously powerful, and has a unique ‘arc slider’ mechanism to reveal the keyboard, but more than that, the Sony Ericsson X1 has about every conceivable bell and whistle it’s possible for mobile phones to have. GPS, WiFi, and HSDPA, it does them all with aplomb. And since the screen resolution is a whopping 800×480 pixels, it tops nearly every other mobile phone in existence for sharpness of screen. The only downside, technically speaking, of the Sony Ericsson X1 is its camera, coming in at just 3 megapixels. But (and its a big but), since Sony Ericsson put exceptional cameras on their mobile phones, a 3 megapixel Sony Ericsson camera is probably not that far off the quality of a 5 megapixel Nokia camera. All in all, then, the Sony Ericsson X1 is one serious contender for the best phone ever made, which makes the Nokia N97’s job even harder…

”Should I get the Sony Ericsson X1, or wait for the Nokia N97?”

So, the big question is should you take he plunge and get the Sony Ericsson X1 now, or wait and see what the Nokia N97 turns out to be like? Well, there’s no doubt that, on paper, the Nokia N97 seems to be the better of the two mobile phones, with a higher-megapixel camera, and a bigger screen that’ll display more colours. However, it’s not that simple. The sheer fact that the Nokia N97 has a bigger and more colourful screen than the Sony Ericsson X1 means it’ll eat batteries, and the X1 should easily outlast it before needing charging. Also, there are rumours of the 16Gb of memory on the Nokia N97 being slow to access, and the unproven nature of the Symbian Touch operating system makes it slightly less of a prospect. And trust me when i say the Sony Ericsson X1 will take some beating. I know this because I asked myself the same question I’m asking here, and I decided that the sensible choice was to get the Sony Ericsson X1. So, I got one. And believe me, it’s just about the best phone I’ve ever seen!

Anyone who likes touchscreen phones should be excited, because the two biggest names in the world of mobile phones have handsets to take touchscreens to a whole new level with the Nokia N97 and the Sony Ericsson X1 Xperia.

Squaring off in history – Sony Ericsson vs Nokia touchscreens of the past

Sony Ericsson are well known for having a history of touchscreen mobile phones, right back beyond the days of the P800. The P800, though, was their first mainstream, proper touchscreen mobile phone. And boy what a phone it was, leaving everything around it in the dust. Followed by the P900, the P910 (their best touchscreen phone before the X1 Xperia arrived), the P990 (a massive letdown) and the P1, their range of touchscreen mobile phones has dwindled somewhat over the years. Mind you, Nokia’s never really got off the ground in the first place, with monstrous mobile phones like the 7700 and 7710. Their back-catalogue of touchscreen mobile phones is pretty grim, which is no doubt why the new 5800, their first mainstream touchscreen phone, is such a breath of fresh air.

But it’s with two specific mobile phones that Sony Ericsson and Nokia are duking it out this time round: the Nokia N97, and the X1 Xperia.

Nokia N97 – Nokia’s mightiest phone

With the Nokia 5800 on track to deliver touchscreen mobile phones to the mid-range market, that leaves a great big gap at the very top-end of the product range; well, there IS a touch-based mobile phone coming soon to fill that gap: the frankly awesome Nokia N97. This uses the same Symbian S60 Touch operating system and packages it inside the body of a proper, full-fat smartphone. So it has an even more huge, 3.5 inch screen, a kick out QWERTY keypad, and the camera now weighs in at a meaty 5 megapixels. The Nokia N97 is, as should be glaringly obvious, destined to be the new flagship Nseries mobile phone, and it’s genuinely as hyper-powered as we’d heard from rumours, with HSDPA, sat-nav, digital compass, and built-in Flash, so that you have an internet experience like no other mobile phones! Put simply the Nokia N97 is unbelievable.

However… there IS a phone that could rain on its parade: fresh from Sony Ericsson, it’s the glamorous X1 Xperia.

X1 Xperia – Xperience a world of cool stuff

Ok, so the Nokia N97 is one heck of a phone, and frankly, it does wonderful things to make Symbian S60 Touch into a mega-powerful player in the world of mobile phones. But it’s up against a seriously heavyweight rival, in the form of Windows Mobile, with the sexiest WM phone ever, the X1 Xperia from Sony Ericsson, their latest flagship mobile phone. And what a phone it is! Packing in more power and connectivity options than most mobile phones can even dream of, the X1 Xperia is a true smartphone, designed to be anything you need it to be. Media is handled beautifully, thanks to an interface similar to the PS3, and although the camera is lower resolution than the Nokia N97, the X1 Xperia has nothing to be ashamed of. Sony Ericsson make frighteningly good cameras for their phones, so a 3MP SE camera isn’t actually that far off from a 5MP Nokia one, in terms of quality. Basically, the X1 Xperia is quite simply one of the most powerful mobile phones ever released, sporting tons of connectivity options (including WiFi and HSDPA), GPS, full Office functionality, and as if al that wasn’t enough, the Sony Ericsson X1 Xperia packages all that in a premium metal body, that is SO much nicer than the Nokia’s shell. In the final analysis, although the Nokia N97 is slightly more powerful on paper, by far the more desirable of the two is the stunning, the exceptional, the downright insanely brilliant, Sony Ericsson X1 Xperia.

2008’s been a good year for touchscreen mobile phones, but if anything, 2009 looks like it’s going to be even better, thanks to two new systems: Google Android, as seen in the T-Mobile G1, and Symbian S60 Touch, as seen in the Nokia N97. But how do these two heavyweight stack up against each other?

Domo Arigato Mr Roboto – The Rise of Google Android via the T-Mobile G1

A new operating system in mobile phones is always something that raises a fair amount of excitement. When it’s completely open source, so anyone can change it, it causes more excitement. When it’s made by one of the biggest names in the universe, Google, then everyone’s going to pay attention. So it was with Google Android, and the T-Mobile G1, the first mobile phone in the entire universe to be built around it. But what makes the T-Mobile G1 so special? Why is it so different to other mobile phones? Well, apart from the fact that the T-Mobile G1 comes with a huge touchscreen and full QWERTY keyboard, putting it firmly in the smartphone territory, that Google Android software makes for a truly unique experience. From the Android marketplace, where you can buy literally ANY extra software for your mobile phone that people can dream up, to the Amazon MP3 store, to Google Maps (and StreetView, with the built-in compass, which has to be seen to be believed), to full integration with GoogleMail, the T-Mobile G1 gives you access to masses of features not seen on any other mobile phones. And because the T-Mobile G1 is the first of its breed, it is truly unique!

Symbian evolves – the Nokia N97

So, while the T-Mobile G1 is heralding in a new day with the brand new Google Android software, what exactly does the biggest name in the business have in store from their mobile phones? Well, the answer is, quite simply, the unbelievable Nokia N97. It’s not the first touchscreen mobile phone from the Finnish giant, but it IS easily the best, as it’s based on the absolute latest version of the Symbian S60 Touch operating system. The huge, widescreen touch display on the Nokia N97 is truly something to behold, and it ties up beautifully with the QWERTY keyboard to give you one of the nicest interfaces in the history of mobile phones. Software-wise, the Nokia N97 is easily as fluid and nice to use as thing like the iPhone and, yes, the T-Mobile G1. And of course, since Symbian has such a massive developer base, software for it is as wide-ranging and you’d like. Basically, the Nokia N97 is a true world-beater.

T-Mobile G1 vs Nokia N97 – Which will win the war?

So, both powerful mobile phones, both really, really innovative… but which is the better of the two, the T-Mobile G1, or the Nokia N97? Well, the T-Mobile G1 has the open source battle sewn up, since the Nokia N97, basically, isn’t open source. Potentially, that means more software available for the T-Mobile G1, as more people can, theoretically, code for it. Also, the G1 is reckoned to have one of the simplest registration procedures of all mobile phones, and you can’t overlook how nice a thing that is to have. However, the simple fact is that the Nokia N97 is far prettier, has a bigger screen, has a better camera, and potentially, has faster internet access. The T-Mobile G1 does have a certain cool factor from being something so new and unprecedented, but when it comes down to it, the Nokia N97 simply slaughters it on build quality and features. And so, if I had to pick one of these mobile phones (which is kind of the point of this article, really), I’d go for the all-conquering Nokia N97.
